Nickel-Cadmium batteries

Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that uses nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as its electrodes. They are known for their long cycle life, robustness, and ability to deliver a high current, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. 

Here are some key characteristics and information about NiCd batteries:

Chemistry: NiCd batteries use a nickel-cadmium chemical reaction to store and release electrical energy. The positive electrode is typically nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH), and the negative electrode is cadmium (Cd). The electrolyte is an alkaline solution, usually potassium hydroxide (KOH).

Advantages:
Long cycle life: NiCd batteries can endure hundreds to thousands of charge and discharge cycles before significant capacity loss occurs.

High discharge rates: They can provide a high and relatively constant voltage during discharge, making them suitable for applications requiring high power output.

Wide operating temperature range: NiCd batteries can function in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.


Reliability: They are known for their durability and reliability, even in demanding environments.

Disadvantages: Memory effect: NiCd batteries can suffer from a memory effect if not fully discharged before recharging. This can lead to a reduction in usable capacity over time.

Toxicity: Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal, which raises environmental concerns and requires special disposal procedures.

Lower energy density: NiCd batteries generally have a lower energy density compared to more modern rechargeable battery technologies like lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

Applications:
  • NiCd batteries have historically been used in various applications, including portable electronics (such as early laptops and cordless phones), power tools, emergency backup lighting, and aviation applications. 
  • They are still used in some niche applications, such as two-way radios, where their durability and ability to provide a constant voltage under heavy load are advantageous.
Maintenance: NiCd batteries require periodic maintenance to prevent memory effect and extend their lifespan. This involves discharging them fully before recharging and occasionally performing a full discharge and recharge cycle (known as "cycling") to refresh their capacity.

Environmental Considerations: Due to the toxicity of cadmium, the disposal of NiCd batteries is regulated in many regions. Recycling programs are in place to recover valuable materials and minimize environmental impact.

It's worth noting that NiCd batteries have been largely replaced by nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in many consumer and industrial applications due to their higher energy density and lower environmental impact. However, NiCd batteries still find use in specific applications where their unique characteristics are advantageous.
